AS5553, Counterfeit Electronic Parts; Avoidance, Detection, Mitigation, and Disposition

In April of 2009, AS5553 was released by SAE Intrenational.  Authored by the G-19 with representatives from Franchise Distribution, Independent Distribution, Component Manufacturers, Aerospace OEM's, and Government Authorities, this Standard has finally addressed the myriad of issues facing everyone who purchases obsolete, hard-to-find, and surplus electronic comopnents.

Previous conventional thinking was to ALWAY purchase product directly from component manufacturers or franchise distribution.  This business logic failed to recogonize the multi-billion dollar market of reputable companies who resell obsolete and surplus electronic components.  Previous thinking did not address the necessity of purchasing obsolete components to support legacy designs.

AS5553 outlines many applicable strategies which combine source of supply, the likelyhood of counterfeit parts, ultimate end use, and project risk into a detailed decision making rubric which can be utilized by OEM's and purchasing organizations.

Oxygen Electronics was pleased to see that much of the business logic and concepts contained within AS5553 were already depolyed and utilized within our very own QMS.  Vendor Risk Profiles have been utilized by Oxygen Electronics for many years and the incorporation of IDEA-STD-1010A into our QMS.

While this standard is still very new, it has been adopted by the Department of Defense and is being taken very seriously throughout industy.  Oxygen Electronics represents that we are currently compliant to AS5553 and will be considering a formal audit to this standard over the next 1-2 years.
