Oxygen Electronics Participates in EMS' Science of Soldering

Exciting news, Oxygen Electronics has taken part in EMS’s Science of Soldering course for standards IPC-J-STD-001E and IPC-A-610E!  We discovered new scientific systems and processes which cater to modern day delicate electronics.

We’ve learned through this course, that many traditional soldering processes and evaluations are outdated and unacceptable.  These standards were developed over 50 years ago for soldering wires to vacuum tube sockets.

This course gave scientific reasoning behind its recommended procedures, making it fun and easy to understand. Armed with this updated information, Oxygen is now fully aware of the importance of up-to-date soldering practices, and the effect they will have on individual component as well as the industry as a whole.

We recommend this course to any and all. From plumbers to electrical engineers and everything in between, if you deal with solder this course will absolutely give you a better and scientific understanding behind solderability and the appropriate process for your application.  From the importance to your choice in flux to the temperature at which you solder, there is something to learn for all. To learn more about EMS please, click here.

FYI: Oxygen will soon be able to offer solderability testing in house as part of our advanced inspection capabilities!!

Suspect Counterfeit Parts & Internet Purchasing Platforms

According to the United States Government Accountability Office or GAO, suspect counterfeit electronic parts can be found on internet purchasing platforms.

The GAO created a fake company and were able to gain membership to multiple Internet platforms giving them access to vendors selling military-grade electronic parts. The GAO requested quotes from numerous vendors asking for 16parts which were 1)authentic part numbers for obselete and rare parts, 2) authentic part numbers with post production date codes, 3) bogus or fake part numbers that are not associated with any authentic parts.

The parts were sent to a third party test house. The testing concluded that all parts were either suspect or bogus parts. "Each part failed mulitple component analyses, including visual, chemical, X-ray, and microscopic testing" (pg.8).

All test reports, photos, and more information regarding this investigation can be found in this document released by the US Government Accountability Office.

2012 US National Defense Authorization Act: Not to Succeed?

According to EBI.com, the 2012 US National Defense Authorization Act may not succeed.

The Act states that "contractors" are responsible for avoiding and detecting counterfeit parts, not component manufacturers or distributors. These responsibilities include: avoiding the use of counterfeit parts, the rework or corrective action of counterfeit parts, and many more.

As said by Barbara Jorgensen, EBN Community Editor, component manufacturers should also be responsible for the prevention of distribution of counterfeit or suspect counterfeit parts. Because of waste and recycling regulations, manufacturers must go to an outside source to be destroyed. On the way, parts get diverted and enter the supply chain.

Recent Government Activities Regarding Counterfeit Products

Department of Justice
Office of Public Affairs
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Tuesday, November 29, 2011

Attorney General Holder Announces Campaign to Combat Demand for Counterfeit Products in Partnership with the National Crime Prevention Council WASHINGTON –

Attorney General Eric Holder and the Department of Justice’s Bureau of Justice Assistance, in collaboration with the National Crime Prevention Council (NCPC), today announced a new public education campaign to combat the purchase and sale of counterfeit and pirated products. The campaign, launched at the White House, will educate the public on various forms of intellectual property theft, from counterfeit consumer goods and pharmaceuticals to illegal downloads and other pirated materials. The campaign will highlight the potential health, safety and economic consequences for American citizens.

Intellectual property (IP) crime refers to the violation of criminal laws that protect copyrights, patents, trademarks, other forms of intellectual property and trade secrets, both in the United States and abroad. IP crimes can destroy jobs, suppress innovation in the United States and jeopardize the health and safety of consumers. In some cases, these activities are used to fund dangerous or even violent criminal enterprises and organized crime networks.

"As our country continues to recover from once-in-a-generation economic challenges, the need to safeguard intellectual property rights – and to protect Americans from intellectual property crimes – has never been more urgent,” said Attorney General Holder. “Through this new public education campaign, we are encouraging the American people to become vigilant partners in identifying and disrupting intellectual property crimes. With their help, I am confident that we can build upon our recent successes in combating intellectual property theft, bringing criminals to justice and protecting consumers and innovators.”

“Intellectual property theft is not a victimless crime – it affects everyone and damages our economy,” said Assistant Attorney General for the Office of Justice Programs Laurie O. Robinson. “We are proud to work with the White House and NCPC toward reducing the demand for counterfeit products through educating the public about intellectual property crime.”

The campaign includes “Premonition,” a television public service announcement (PSA) created in partnership with MTV Networks that illustrates how IP thefts link to gangs and other criminal activities and “It Hurts,” an online video that demonstrates how IP theft is stealing. The campaign also includes radio and print ads as well as campaign materials delivered via social media tools – videos, podcasts and web banners. The public service announcements and other IP theft public education campaign materials can be found at www.ncpc.org/getreal.

Attorney General Holder and Assistant Attorney General Robinson were joined at today’s campaign launch by Intellectual Property Enforcement Coordinator in the Executive Office of the President Victoria Espinel, Director of Immigration and Customs at the Department of Homeland Security John Morton, Acting Deputy Secretary of Commerce Rebecca M. Blank, and President and CEO of the National Crime Prevention Council Ann M. Harkins.

X-Ray as a Tool to Identify Counterfeit Electronic Components

Utilizing X-Ray inspection can be beneficial in detecting counterfeit components during goods inward inspection for plastic components.  During X-Ray inspection the Die Size, Wire Bonding, and Die Frame are compared to ensure consistancy of construction.  While X-Ray inspection isn't a 100% guarantee that a component is authentic, when combined with other advanced inspection techniques, it provides a much higher level of confidence in the authenticity of a product.  This is particularly so for a product for which there is limited or no traceability to the component manufacturer.

In the following example X-Ray inspection was performed on an Agilet HCPL3101 (Datasheet and Photo of HCPL3101).  Evidence of the Die and Wire Bonding is evident in the center of the X-Ray Image.  Wire Bonding from the Die to the Pins is also evident and the non-connect pins are consistant with the MFG datasheet.
X-Ray Image of HCPL3101

The second example of X-Ray inspection was performed on a MC14163BCL (Datasheet and Photos).  As this part is a Ceramic DIL package the beam power required to penetrate the ceramic body causes much of the inside of the component to be "washed out."  Very sophisticated and very expensive equiptment is required to be able to identify the Die Frame, Die, and Wire Bonding in the same image during X-Ray inspection.  The below images would lead the viewer to think there was no wire bonding between the Die and the Pins.  Despite the X-Ray images not showing this evidence, wire bonding and the die was discovered when the component was de-capped.

X-Ray Image of MC14163BCL

In the next example part number M5M51008BFP-70LLI (Datasheet and Photos) was inspected using an X-Ray.  In the below image it is evident that Pin 1 is a non-connect pin which is consistant with the manufacturers datasheet.
