US & China Join Forces to Seize Counterfeit Goods

According to reuters.com, USA and China has teamed up to seize counterfeit goods. During this long month operation, they focused on goods in ports exported from China or imported into the US.

"China is the primary source of counterfeit and pirated goods in the United States and accounts for 72 percent of all seizures relating to intellectual property rights, according to the U.S. agency's fiscal 2012 statistics."

Only one arrest was made in this process, but this is just a start. This task force has seized more than 243,000 fake electronic products, including Apple, Samsung, Dr. Dre and Blackberry. All of these products are popular consumer items.

Massachusetts Man Charged with Selling Counterfeit Semiconductors

According to www.justice.gov, Peter Picone of Methuen, MA., has been charged and indictment with eight counts regarding importing counterfeit semiconductors from China to the USA.

At least two of the circuits were intended for active-duty nuclear submarines in Groton.

The charges range from between February 2007 to April 2012, through two companies Tytronix Inc. and Epic International Electronics, purchased counterfeit product from sources in Hong Kong and China. The eight counts include, "conspiring to traffic in counterfeit goods, conspiring to traffic in counterfeit military goods, trafficking in counterfeit goods, conspiring to commit wire fraud, wire fraud and conspiring to commit money laundering".

Oxygen Electronics has always taken measures against counterfeit products, and companies who purchase and sell them. Oxygen Electronics has never purchased from Epic International Electronics and has had Tytronix as a disqualified vendor since 2006 as a result of our poor experience with the vendor between 2005 and 2006. Slowly Getting Better....

According to Globalpurchasing.com, 2013 will be a slight year for growth in the Electronics Supply Chain.  Rising costs, taxes, shipping, and many more key concerns are occurring throughout the supply chain.

Michael Knight of TTI states that in 2012, the Electronics industry "went sideways". He also states that "there's a possibility that 2013 will be another 'sideways'". He estimates a 2% or 3% plus or minus to the industry.

French Customs Seize Counterfeit Electronic Components

According to CBP.gov, the CBP, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, with partnership of the French Customs, have worked vigorously targeting counterfeit computer and electronic components "including semiconductors, computer networking equipment, hard drives, and memory cards".

The CPB have seized 480 shipments of possible harmful counterfeit electronic components between November 1st, 2013 to April, 2013.

Al Gina, CBP Assistant Commissioner, and François Richard, French Customs Attaché , both agree that these counterfeit products are a huge problem for the country's economy and the people's health and safety. Customs leaders from both nations are extremely happy with the results, and plan to continue working together.

Counterfeit Incidents Maintain Record Rate in 2012

According to EEherold.com, the reported incidents of counterfeit electronic component parts this year has been maintaining the record pace set in 2011. This proves that counterfeit parts are a serious and growing risk to the electronic supply chain.

Among other reporting agencies, GIDEP and ERAI have made significant majority of these reports.

U.S. Department of Justice Stops Russian "Scheme"

According to BIS.DOC.GOV, the U.S. Department of Justice has arrested and charged 11 members of a Russian military procurement network operating in Texas and Russia.

Since October 2008 to present, this scheme was used. Those involved were obtaining "advanced, technologically cutting-edge microelectronics from manufacturers and suppliers located with the UNited States and to export those high-tech goods to Russia". The American company is known as Arc Electronics, Inc.

Oxygen Electronics Participates in EMS' Science of Soldering

Exciting news, Oxygen Electronics has taken part in EMS’s Science of Soldering course for standards IPC-J-STD-001E and IPC-A-610E!  We discovered new scientific systems and processes which cater to modern day delicate electronics.

We’ve learned through this course, that many traditional soldering processes and evaluations are outdated and unacceptable.  These standards were developed over 50 years ago for soldering wires to vacuum tube sockets.

This course gave scientific reasoning behind its recommended procedures, making it fun and easy to understand. Canada Dismisses U.S. Concern for Counterfeit Parts

According to cbc.ca, the Canadian government has dismissed the U.S. concerns involving counterfeit Chinese military parts.

Although multiple Canadian executives and brokers say that Asian counterfeit is an extreme problem, Julian Fantino, Canada's Associate Defense Minister states that "the checks and balances we have in place in our country are sufficient" and that the Canadian Government has no plans to follow suit.

National Defense Authorization Act: Counterfeit Products

According to the National Defense Authorization Act of the Fiscal Year of 2013 the security of the electronic suplpy chain needs to become tighter in  two areas. One addressing the needs for procuring the components from suppliers that are certified. The other is related to combating counterfeit copmonents.

Senate Armed Services Committee Releases Report on Counterfeit Electronic Parts

On May 21st, 2012 the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee released a report on counterfeit electronic parts. According to this release, the SASC discovered counterfeit electronic parts from China in a U.S. Air Force cargo plane in also in a U.S. Navy surveillance plane among 1,800 cases of bogus parts.

The SASC shows how extremely vulnerable the defense supply chain is by allowing countrefeit electronic parts to "infiltrate critical U.S. military systems, risking our security and lives of the men and women who protect it".

Panasonic Factory Suffers Storm Damage

According to Evertiq.com, on April 29th, 2012, a Panasonic Electronic Components factory in Jiangmen,China has suffered major storm damage causing production to come to a halt. A tornado tore a large piece of roofing off the the factory building, causing the factory to flood up to 5-10cm.

MVP Micro and VisionTech Suspensions by the US Navy

As previously reported on our blog Oxygen Electronics performed a complete review of purchases from MVP Micro and related companies on March 3, 2010 (Previous Posting).   Oxygen Electronics has learned that MVP Micro has subsequently been disbarred from selling goods to the DOD by the U.S. Navy on Feb 24, 2012.

Additionally, VisionTech has been officially restricted from selling goods to the DOD by the US Navy on April 13, 2012.   You can read the post from September 16, 2010 on our blog at this link:  Previous Posting.

Semiconductor Book to Bill Ratio

The Semiconductor Book-to-Bill Ratio climbed back above 1 in February of 2012, the first time since September of 2010 ending a 16 month streak of bookings being less than billings.  (Source: Semiconductor Equipment and Material International and www.economy.com)

Global Semiconductor Shipments Fall

Global shipments of semiconductors, as compiled by the Semiconductor Industry Association and reported by www.economy.com, have been decreasing since November of 2011.
